PRUNE SALOON
TYPEFACE DESIGN & MARKETING MATERIALS
Prune Saloon is a fully functional display typeface I developed as a reference to old school, slab serif, woodblock typefaces of the 19th century. Since this is an approach that has been tried many times before, I decided to design the type as if I was digitizing a woodblock type that had been left to rot out in a shed somewhere for the past 100 years or so. With this in mind, I felt that copy/pasting elements of the letterforms would be inauthentic and inaccurate. Therefore, each letterform needed to be hand done with their own custom warping and ‘pruning.’
In addition to the OpenType font file, I also developed promotional elements that could sell the typeface’s ability to be implemented in various settings. Creating a cohesive sense of branding, yet diverse potential applications was important to make the type appealing to a wide audience.
