WHO DO I
THINK I AM?
My name is Will McGavin and I’m a designer based out of Denver, Colorado. I enjoy trying on a lot of different hats as a designer and am always up to find more ways to humble myself and find new ways to communicate with new audiences. Yeah sure, wanting to connect to a wide variety of people is probably a cliche for every designer, but (hear me out) I enjoy ditching some formalities when it comes to that connection. In other words, I take the quality of my work seriously while not taking myself too seriously. By being a little less formal than what’s typical I find it keeps myself from being too stiff in my process and allows me to be more open to variation and experimentation all while yielding results that don’t suck. (Admittedly, it can take a couple of tries sometimes, and you know what? I’m okay with that.)
With that attitude towards creating I’ve found myself embracing a more chaotic side of visual language. However, I’ve already learned that this embrace has a chance to look pretty shitty if I can’t bring order to it, so the chaos must come in the form of measured disruption. I’ve learned that important rule thanks to my creative practice having roots in impressionist painting (which is a genre that needs some order to be properly loose). That is the first place I learned to embrace my creative restrictions in order to properly engage with them and overcome them. To sum that up, I like learning the rules of a style or medium with the only motive of breaking those rules appropriately.
